Defining Art From Design

One of the most complex debates for many years is the difference between art and design. When it comes to their work, designers and artists are producers of visual compositions. The only difference that they have different reasons why they do what they do. Designers are using many medium while artists create their artworks on canvas art. There are designers who categorize themselves as artists but it is rare to hear of an artist thinking themselves as designers.

The main difference between art and design is that good art is able to inspire people while good design is able to motivate – this all points to the fact that their purpose are not the same. With art, the process begins from scratch such as a blank canvas. The artist creates art coming from their feelings, opinions or views. The artwork is created in order to relay to other people what they are feeling and with hope that others might be inspired by it. The most popular artworks these days are those that show the strongest emotional connection between the viewer and the artist.

In the case of designers, they have a chosen starting point before they set out doing their work. It can be in the form of an idea, message or an image. The designer does not create something new but they want to relay something that is already in existence with a purpose in mind. Designers have a goal of motivating the audience such as enticing them to purchase products and services, to visit a place or to relay information.

Second difference between art and design is that good art is created to be interpreted by the viewers while designs are created to be understood. Artworks can be interpreted in many ways while a design is created in order to motivate people to do one thing. One can decided on how good a canvas art is based on their taste while design can be judged based on people’s opinion. A person who knows how to create good art is considered to be talented while someone who makes good design is deemed as skillful.
