Palatal Expanders: What To Expect From The Process

One importance tooth appliance is palatal expanders an appliance used to provide more space for tooth along the upper jawbones or the back of the mouth. It is a custom-made device, specifically made for every individual that requires orthodontic attention to prevent crossbites and overcrowding.  You can find a lot of clinics that offer the service of fitting the appliance to patients so they will have room in their mouth for permanent teeth to grow.

The device has two halves that are connected with a screw at the center. To activate the device, patients or their parents are taught how to turn the screw very minimally every day. To turn the screw, a special key is provided for patients to use. By turning the key, some tension is induced where the palatal bones are linked. As a result, the palatal bones move apart through the palatal expanders. When the target expansion or space is achieved, the device is left attached inside the mouth for a few months to give way for a new bone to develop and stabilize the expansion. Generally, palatal expanders are worn from 3 to 6 months.

Palatal expanders effectively aids in fixing crossbites and overcrowding issues. They are also recommended for patients to have it while they have not yet reached their puberty stage since their bones are still malleable and easy to correct. Wearing palatal expanders have a number of benefits. However, it would be worthy to note that the device and the entire process can also cause some soreness or discomfort to the patient.

Some of the things to expect from palatal expanders are the feel of pressure within the mouth for a few minutes after the screw key is turned. However, this discomfort is minimal compared to the discomfort caused by having the braces tightened. Your child may also complain of discomfort when eating and speaking but this is temporary while the tongue still adjusts to the presence of the device.  It is also normal to find a gap between the front teeth while the expander is doing its work.
